Reports To: Vice President of Credit Risk and Analytics
Position location: This role is required to be in the office in Overland Park, KS Tues-Thu on a weekly basis
 
Position Summary:
 
As the Director of Fraud Strategy, you will lead the strategic vision, design, execution, and optimization of our fraud prevention and detection programs across all company services. You will be responsible for protecting our customers and business from financial fraud, while ensuring regulatory compliance and enabling seamless customer experiences. This role requires a mix of analytical expertise, operational leadership, cross-functional collaboration skills, and a deep understanding of fraud trends and automated detection products within digital financial services.
 
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
 
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the company’s enterprise fraud prevention and detection strategy across all products and channels, aligned with business objectives.
  • Fraud Expertise: Identify emerging fraud trends, vulnerabilities, and attack vectors, and implement effective countermeasures, specifically focused on synthetic data, AI-generated documentation, and account takeover strategies.
  • Team Management: Manage a high-performing fraud team, including business analysts, operations partners/investigators, and data scientists.
  • Fraud Operations: Oversee day-to-day fraud operations, including transaction monitoring, customer authentication, investigation, and case management processes.
  • Technology & Tools: Partner with engineering and product teams to enhance fraud detection systems using machine learning, behavioral analytics, and third-party tools.
  • Data & Analytics: Leverage internal and external data to monitor fraud impacts on portfolio performance, identify vulnerabilities, and refine rules and models.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Legal, Compliance, Product, Marketing, Special Operations, and Risk teams to create a holistic fraud risk framework.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all fraud prevention activities comply with federal and state laws, as well as industry standards (e.g., KYC, AML, PCI-DSS).
  • Incident Management: Lead responses to fraud-related incidents, including escalation, reporting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Reporting & Metrics: Define and track KPIs to measure the effectiveness of fraud controls and present findings to executive leadership.
 
Experience:
 
  • 8+ years of experience in fraud prevention, risk management, or compliance within the financial services or Fintech industry.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in quantitative and qualitative analytics and modeling related to fraud detection or risk scoring with supervised and un-supervised techniques
  • Experience in high-growth startup environments.
Education:
 
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Data Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field
  • Preferred: Advanced degree (MBA, MS in Data Analytics, or JD).
  • Professional certifications such as CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner), CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist), or CFCS (Certified Financial Crime Specialist).
 
Skills and Competencies:
 
  • Proven track record of leading fraud prevention programs and managing cross-functional teams. 
  • Define long-term vision, risk appetite, reg flags, and KPIs for fraud mitigation.
  • Strong in cost benefit analysis
  • Experience with fraud detection platforms, machine learning models, and transactional monitoring systems.
  • Strong understanding of fraud typologies (e.g., account takeover, synthetic identity, phishing, payment fraud, affiliate fraud).
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as BSA/AML, FFIEC, and GDPR.
  • Familiarity with fraud patterns specific to different marketing channels (affiliate lead traffic, organic traffic, direct mail, and known customers).
  • Build and lead teams of analysts, investigators, and data scientists.
  • Oversee case management, alert triage, tool effectiveness, and investigation workflows.
  • Establish SOPs, internal fraud policies, and ongoing training programs.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and executive presentation skills
 
 
Work Environment 
 
This is a hybrid position. Candidates MUST reside in the Kansas City Metro area in order to be considered. No exceptions. This role is required to be in the office Tues-Thurs on a weekly basis.
